Protein drinks have surpassed the sales of Banana Milk—long considered the symbol of popular convenience store beverages—for the first time.
According to GS25, sales in the protein drink category during the first half of this year increased by 26.8% compared to the same period last year.
During the same period, protein drink sales were 3.7% higher than the Banana Milk category.
Compared to chocolate milk and strawberry milk categories, protein drinks also led by 44.6% and 158%, respectively.
This is the first time protein drinks have overtaken Banana Milk.

GS25 pointed to the growing 'healthy pleasure' trend—where consumers seek both taste and health—as the key reason for this shift.
When protein drinks were first launched, they focused on functionality, such as protein supplementation,
but recently, the number of products emphasizing mass appeal in taste has increased, broadening the consumer base rapidly.
The number of product types has also grown significantly.
When GS25 first began selling protein drinks in 2020, there were only 3 related products,
but now the category has expanded to over 50 varieties.
The demand during the summer months is also having an impact.
GS25 explained that protein drink sales peak in July and August, when demand for body management rises ahead of summer vacation season.
Accordingly, this month GS25 is running promotions such as 1+1 and 2+1 offers on around 40 types of protein drinks.
