The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education announced that 263 elementary, middle, and high school student athletes will compete in 8 events at the 107th National Winter Sports Festival, which will be held for four days from February 25 to 28 with Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province as the main host region.
This National Winter Sports Festival, held in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, the mecca of winter sports, will take place across the province, including Chuncheon, Gangneung, Pyeongchang, and Taebaek, under the slogan, "A Special Winter in Gangwon, a United Republic of Korea."
The delegation of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education will field 263 elementary, middle, and high school student athletes in 8 events, an increase of 24 from the 239 student athletes who participated in last year's National Winter Sports Festival. They are determined to do their best until the very end, fully demonstrate the skills they have honed so far, and thoroughly enjoy this winter sports festival.
In addition, as the National Winter Sports Festival will continue to be held in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province through 2029, starting from last year, it is expected to help improve the performance of participating students by utilizing Gangwon's world-class Winter Olympics cultural legacy.
Student athletes from Gangwon are aiming for strong results in skiing (sub-events: alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country), biathlon, bobsleigh and skeleton, curling, and ice hockey.
Lee Inbeom, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports, and Special Education, said, "I hope this competition will provide our student athletes with an opportunity to fully display their abilities," adding, "We will cheer for and spare no support so that our elementary, middle, and high school student athletes can do their best for their future paths while balancing sports and studies amid demanding training."
