The Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education will announce its "2026 Plan to Strengthen Functions of the Main Office and Affiliated Institutions" on the 12th, in order to proactively respond to the rapidly changing educational environment and to realize student-centered, responsible education.
The key points of this functional enhancement plan include the establishment of a dedicated organization to ensure the stable introduction of the Gangwon-style high school credit system, and the strengthening of special education support by expanding customized support for students eligible for special education.
First, as of March 1, the Provincial Office of Education will establish the "High School Credit System Support Center" as a team-level unit under the Secondary Education Division of the Bureau of Education. The center, which will be launched by expanding and reorganizing the work of the existing Secondary Education Team, is expected to systematically support the design of student-centered curricula and the expansion of subject choices, and to serve as a control headquarters overseeing the stable operation of the Gangwon-style high school credit system.
Next, as of June 1, the affiliated institution "Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education Special Education Center" will open, further strengthening the special education support system. The Special Education Center will operate with its main campus in Chuncheon and branch campuses in Wonju and Gangneung, and will carry out specialized functions that reflect the characteristics of each region.
The Chuncheon main campus will be responsible for special education policy research and diagnosis and evaluation; the Wonju branch will focus on future-oriented vocational education such as smart farms and drones; and the Gangneung branch will specialize in disability-focused safety experiences and culture and arts education. Through this, the office plans to prevent overlapping investments and maximize regional expertise.
Jung Youngchun, Head of the Education Support Division, said, "This organizational enhancement goes beyond a simple expansion of units and reflects Gangwon Education's determination to take full responsibility for the career paths and aptitudes of each and every student," adding, "We will actively support the High School Credit System Support Center and the Special Education Center so that they become the driving forces behind a new leap forward for education in Gangwon."
