Busan Port Authority, KMI, KOPRI, and KRISO Launch Eco-friendly Arctic Shipping Route Working Group

Busan Port Authority (BPA) has formed a working group with organizations representing the fields of port logistics, policy research, polar science, and marine technology to prepare for the era of eco-friendly Arctic shipping routes.

On the 10th, the authority announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with three organizations: the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), and the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), to support the government in developing Arctic shipping route policies and to establish a close cooperation framework.

The working group was established to explore eco-friendly and sustainable ways to utilize Arctic shipping routes in response to the accelerating Arctic ice melt and changes in the global logistics environment, which are increasing the strategic importance of these routes.

Under the agreement, the four organizations will cooperate in various areas, including: sharing technologies, information, and research outcomes related to Arctic shipping routes; collaborating on artificial intelligence transformation (AX) and digital transformation (DX) technologies and policies; supporting domestic logistics companies in using Arctic shipping routes; and regularly holding domestic and international seminars and policy forums related to eco-friendly Arctic shipping routes.

Song Sanggeun, President of Busan Port Authority, said, "Through the establishment of this working group, we expect the four organizations to generate a synergistic effect by leveraging their respective expertise and strengths," adding, "We will continue to provide strong support for the development and implementation of the government's Arctic shipping route policies and work toward the eco-friendly and sustainable use of Arctic shipping routes."
