With the annual number of inbound tourists to Korea expected to reach 20 million, the app experience for global users will become more convenient, allowing tourists to more easily experience the "K-Delivery" culture that has been featured in dramas and movies.
Baemin is the only food delivery app in Korea that supports overseas credit card payments as well as global easy payment methods such as WeChat Pay and Alipay+. In December last year, the number of orders using global payment methods increased by about 300% compared to the same month in 2024. With the addition of multilingual support, accessibility and usability for foreign-language users are expected to improve further.
To build a multilingual environment, Baemin has adopted generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology based on a large language model (LLM). Instead of simply translating and replacing text, the system understands the full meaning and context of words and sentences to deliver natural and accurate expressions. This enables foreign-language users to understand the key steps in the app and use the service with ease.
Foreign-language users can check all major flows related to food delivery orders in the language they are familiar with, including search, restaurant and menu selection, payment, and delivery status. Baemin plans to gradually expand the scope of multilingual support through continuous updates. The company is also considering introducing an automatic translation feature for chat-based customer inquiries when questions arise.
The multilingual feature is applied only to the user app screens, while operations such as order receipt and dispatch will remain unchanged. Baemin partner restaurants (owners) and riders can continue to use the service as before. From a partner’s perspective, improved order accessibility for foreign customers, including tourists, is expected to lead to additional sales from new customers.
The Baemin app language can be changed depending on the mobile operating system (OS), such as Android or iOS. If the OS is set to a language other than Korean, a pop-up will appear when launching the Baemin app, guiding users to change the Baemin app language in the OS settings. If the mobile device is set to Korean, users can change the language in the OS settings. The related app update is currently being rolled out sequentially.
Baemin plans not only to conduct ongoing monitoring and improvements for multilingual support, but also to build resources such as a "menu name glossary" to continuously enhance translation accuracy and overall quality. The company is also reviewing ways to expand multilingual support, which currently applies only to food delivery orders, to other services such as groceries and shopping.
Baek Inbeom, Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Woowa Brothers, said, "We hope that not only tourists but also foreign-language users residing in Korea will be able to use delivery services easily, and that Korea’s advanced delivery system will spread widely around the world," adding, "We will continue to refine various features so that more customers can enjoy delivery services without any barriers to entry."
