The attorney for former Minister of National Defense Kim Yonghyun has been detained. It has been two months since he was sentenced to 15 days of confinement for causing a disturbance in the courtroom.
According to the legal community on the 3rd, the 33rd Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Jinkwan) executed a confinement order that day against attorney Lee Hasang, who represents the former minister. Confinement refers to detaining a person who has violated courtroom order in a prison or detention center for a certain period, pursuant to the presiding judge's order.
Judge Lee is said to have entered the courtroom in question accompanied by court bailiffs immediately after the judges left the courtroom following a hearing in former Minister Kim's case before the 34th Criminal Division of the same court (Presiding Judge Han Seongjin), presented the written confinement order to attorney Lee, and carried out the confinement.
Attorney Lee will be held at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, until the 16th. Since he was held at the detention center for one day on November 19 last year, the day the confinement was imposed, he will stay there for only 14 more days. Meanwhile, the defense team for the former minister issued a statement opposing the court's decision to execute the confinement order.
