Pohang-si Offers Up to 40 Million Won for New "Residential Hanok" Construction...Applications Accepted Until the 27th

Construction cost support, demolition and sale restricted for 5 years after completion

Pohang-si will fully launch the "2026 Hanok Construction Support Project" to spread the residential culture of traditional hanok houses and ease citizens' burden of construction costs.

Pohang-si announced that it will provide subsidies of up to 40 million won per building to owners who newly build or extend hanok houses for actual residential purposes.

This project has been prepared to promote hanok houses as everyday residential spaces for citizens, rather than merely as tourism resources.

Those eligible for support are residents who wish to live in the hanok and have their resident registration in Gyeongsangbuk-do. They can apply when constructing a detached house with a floor area of at least 60 square meters or when extending a separate hanok building.

To enhance the effectiveness of the project, the city plans to give priority review to cases where construction permits have already been obtained, or where there are plans to create a "hanok village" that will link 10 or more hanok houses.

Post-management regulations will also be strictly enforced to prevent speculation and ensure stable residential settlement.

For buildings that receive subsidies, demolition and sale will be restricted for five years after completion, and the actual residence requirement must be maintained during that period.

Applicants must submit their application form and required documents by the 27th by visiting the Architectural Design Division of Pohang City Hall, the civil affairs offices of each district office, or the eup, myeon, and dong administrative welfare centers.

Kim Boksoo, Director of the Urban Safety and Housing Bureau of Pohang-si, said, "This project is a policy aimed at spreading hanok houses as living spaces where citizens actually reside, rather than as assets for a specific class or as tourism resources," adding, "We hope for active participation from citizens who are interested in a residential environment where tradition and modernity are in harmony."

Detailed announcement information and application forms can be found in the notices section on the Pohang-si website.
