Ten People Power Party Lawmakers: "Harmful to the Local Elections"

Some members of the People Power Party have submitted a petition to the Seoul Metropolitan Party Ethics Committee, requesting disciplinary action against Dr. Ko Sung-guk, a hardline conservative YouTuber and party member.

Party members Kim Hyungdong, Ko Dongjin, Park Junghoon, Jeong Seongguk, Woo Jaejun, Yoo Yongwon, Ahn Sanghoon, Kim Geon, Han Jia, and Jin Jongoh submitted this petition to the Seoul Metropolitan Party Ethics Committee on January 30. Dr. Ko operates a political YouTube channel with 1.33 million subscribers. He joined the Seoul branch of the People Power Party on January 5.

The lawmakers explained, "(Dr. Ko) has damaged the party's reputation through discriminatory remarks based on political views and other reasons without reasonable cause, engaging in conduct that goes against the ethical sensibilities and sentiments of the general public."

They added, "Not only did he engage in extremely harmful actions against the party, which is striving for victory in the local elections, but he also violated current laws, the party constitution, party regulations, and the code of ethics, thereby hindering the party's development." They pointed out that, as a result of his actions, public sentiment has turned away from the party, which constitutes grounds for disciplinary action.

The lawmakers criticized Dr. Ko's words and actions, stating that he violated Article 4 (Maintaining Dignity) of the Code of Ethics. They also explained that this falls under the grounds for disciplinary action specified in Article 20 (Grounds for Disciplinary Action), Items 1, 2, and 3 of the Ethics Committee regulations.

A member of the Chinhan faction commented, "Rather than reflecting the intention of any one individual, this is part of an effort to create a healthy party by addressing problematic behavior." They further explained, "Once the petition for disciplinary action is submitted, it will be referred to the Seoul Metropolitan Party Ethics Committee, which will then make a decision. If Dr. Ko requests a retrial, the case could go up to the Supreme Council."
