Samcheok City in Gangwon Province will begin full-scale implementation this year of the Seongnae District (Dangjeo-dong) project, which was finally selected for the '2025 Old Residential Area Improvement Support Project' hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The project aims to create a safe and pleasant residential environment through small-scale improvements in old low-rise residential areas where comprehensive redevelopment is difficult. To this end, Samcheok City has designated Dangjeo-dong, which has the highest vacancy rate among urban areas in the city, as the top priority for the old residential area improvement project and will focus on intensive maintenance there.
A total of 11.8 billion won will be invested in the project from 2026 to 2029. The plan includes demolishing vacant buildings and utilizing the secured land to carry out 12 key initiatives in stages, such as creating youth hubs, constructing roads to resolve landlocked plots, and establishing small-scale living infrastructure.
The city plans to hold a project briefing for residents and stakeholders in the first half of this year, and will sequentially proceed with related administrative processes such as compensation procedures. Through this, the city aims to fully gather residents' opinions and minimize conflicts during the project implementation process.
An official from Samcheok City stated, "The old residential area improvement project is more than just an environmental improvement initiative; it is an important opportunity to restore the local community and revitalize the city," adding, "We will do our utmost to prepare for every stage of the project to ensure its prompt and seamless execution."
