Busan Transportation Corporation Establishes In-House DevOps, Cuts Deployment Time by 80%

Development of Open-Source-Based Automated Deployment System
Accelerating Innovation in Public IT Operations

Busan Transportation Corporation (President Lee Byungjin) has developed its own system equipped with source code version control and automated deployment features, establishing a DevOps environment.

The corporation aims to drive innovation in public IT operations by simultaneously reducing deployment times and enhancing operational stability.

The newly implemented system includes secure storage and change history management for source code, automated anomaly detection, automatic generation of executable files, and automated deployment. It also integrates a library repository and a knowledge management tool (Wiki.JS). By standardizing and automating the entire process from development to deployment and operations, the corporation has achieved what it considers a complete DevOps environment.

Previously, deployment tasks for each system were performed manually, taking about 10 to 40 minutes. After introducing the DevOps system, this time has been significantly reduced to just 2 to 7 minutes-a time savings of up to 80%. By applying a branch strategy that clearly separates the development and production environments, the corporation has also fundamentally prevented unnecessary code from being applied to production servers.

Another notable aspect is the implementation of the latest open-source technologies such as Docker, GitLab, and Jenkins within a closed network environment. This approach has allowed the corporation to minimize security risks while achieving IT operational efficiency on par with the private sector. By building the system entirely with internal resources-without relying on commercial solutions or outsourcing-the corporation has also saved approximately 20 million KRW in budget.

Currently, user training for IT support staff and maintenance personnel has been completed, ensuring that system operation and maintenance are also being stably managed by internal personnel.

Lee Byungjin, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, stated, "The establishment of this DevOps environment is not only a key step in improving work efficiency and minimizing inconvenience for citizens, but also an important starting point for expanding the corporation’s digital capabilities with a focus on AI. We will continue to pursue AI transformation and digital innovation to provide better services to citizens using the urban railway."
