Paju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on December 9 that it is continuously conducting “Night Owl Patrols” with citizens to block sex buyers, and that the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency has also deployed police personnel not only at night but also during the day since December 4, as part of a joint effort by the public, local government, and police to actively prevent the influx of sex buyers.
Paju City explained that, thanks to this citizen participation and the active cooperation of the police, the effectiveness of suppressing the influx of sex buyers has become increasingly evident, and the closure of the red-light district is rapidly becoming a reality.
An official from Paju City stated, “We deeply appreciate the citizens who are working with us and the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency for their efforts to close the red-light district. Going forward, Paju City will focus all administrative resources on eradicating prostitution.” The official added, “We will also do our utmost to rescue and support victims of prostitution.”
Meanwhile, Paju City enacted the “Paju City Ordinance on Support for the Self-Reliance of Victims of Prostitution” in 2023 and has since rescued 22 victims of prostitution. The city provides housing support as well as living expenses and job training for up to three years. It was reported that the victims are currently undergoing processes to heal and recover from physical and psychological harm and trauma resulting from their experiences.
