Songchu Nursing Town is a region where 16 nursing facilities-an unusually high concentration nationwide-are clustered together, with around 1,000 residents with mobility difficulties. This makes disaster response particularly challenging in the event of an emergency.

Due to these regional characteristics, the need to strengthen the safety system has been consistently raised. The launch of this brigade is highly significant as the nation’s first volunteer fire brigade model specialized for nursing towns, reflecting these needs.

The Songchu Nursing Town Specialized Medical Volunteer Fire Brigade is comprised primarily of professional staff within the facilities, such as nurses, social workers, and care workers, establishing a specialized volunteer fire brigade system capable of immediate response in actual emergencies.

In particular, alongside the inauguration ceremony, enhancements to the local safety infrastructure were completed in line with the region’s unique needs. Occupancy notification boards were installed in every room to improve the rescue system for residents with mobility challenges, and new fire hydrants and emergency fire extinguishing devices were added to boost initial fire response capabilities, thereby establishing a self-reliant disaster management foundation.

Kwon Sunwook, Chief of Yangju Fire Station, stated, “The launch of the Songchu Nursing Town Specialized Medical Volunteer Fire Brigade marks the beginning of a tailored, self-reliant management system to protect disaster-vulnerable groups. We will continue to work closely with the local community to make Yangju a safer city.”

Meanwhile, starting with the inauguration ceremony, the Songchu Nursing Town Specialized Medical Volunteer Fire Brigade plans to carry out concrete and ongoing safety activities, including: ▲ fire drills focused on enhancing on-site practical skills, ▲ systematic professional emergency care training, and ▲ expanded community cooperation initiatives.
