Pocheon City Meets with Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment to Address Water Supply Issues

Pocheon City in Gyeonggi Province visited Kim Sung-hwan, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment, on November 30 to explain the three major issues concerning the local water supply system and to request active government support.

The city explained that the unresolved issue of abolishing the Naechon Water Intake and Purification Plant in Naechon-myeon has long been a major local concern, presenting it as the top priority. Although the Naechon area has switched to a regional water supply system and no longer uses the intake facility, the remaining infrastructure continues to pose significant restrictions during the approval process for various development projects. Accordingly, Pocheon City officially requested that the Ministry of Environment actively consider practical measures, including approval for the abolition of the intake and purification plant.

The city also emphasized the need for national budget support for the water supply stabilization project. This project consists of the construction of the Seondan Reservoir (total project cost: 20 billion won) and the duplication of the water transmission pipeline between Gunnae and Ildong Reservoirs (total project cost: 33.4 billion won). Once both projects are completed, a stable water supply system will be established, serving as a key infrastructure to support the mid- to long-term development of Pocheon City.

Pocheon City expects that if both the abolition of the Naechon Water Intake and Purification Plant and the water supply stabilization project are pursued together, there will be tangible benefits such as improvements to the local development environment, a secure water supply system even in the event of pipeline accidents or emergencies, prevention of large-scale water outages, and enhanced water quality and quantity through the improvement of aging facilities. Furthermore, the city anticipates that significant improvements to the water supply infrastructure in the Soheul-Seondan and Gunnae-Ildong areas will strengthen the city's ability to respond to climate crises and various disasters, greatly enhancing the safety and convenience of residents' daily lives.

Baek Younghyun, Mayor of Pocheon, stated, "Providing clean and stable water is not only the responsibility of local governments but also a shared national duty," adding that Pocheon City will strengthen cooperation with the central government and Gyeonggi Province to modernize and stabilize the water supply infrastructure.
