Pusan National University Partners with Germany's Fraunhofer Institute to Tackle Global Technological Challenges

Establishing a Joint Research Lab to Strengthen Korea-Germany Cooperation
Expanding the Global Innovation R&D Ecosystem

Pusan National University is joining forces with the Fraunhofer Institute, the largest applied science research organization in Europe, to establish an international joint research platform aimed at addressing global technological challenges.

Pusan National University (PNU, President Choi Jaewon) announced on December 1 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Fraunhofer Institute to establish the "PNU-Fraunhofer IKTS Joint Lab." The Fraunhofer Institute is the largest applied science research organization in Europe, operating 76 institutes and centers across Germany.

This agreement was established to address global technological challenges faced by both Korea and Germany, including next-generation batteries, AI-based manufacturing innovation, eco-friendly and zero-emission technologies, and the green transition. Recently, close cooperation between the two countries has become increasingly important in the future industries of electric vehicles, the hydrogen economy, and eco-friendly technologies. The need for joint research and development (R&D) is growing in areas such as batteries, hydrogen conversion technologies, AI, semiconductors, and the sustainable economy.

Through this agreement, Pusan National University and the Fraunhofer Institute aim to solve global technological challenges by focusing on the joint research lab and building a joint research platform in strategic fields such as next-generation battery technology, AI-based manufacturing innovation, and sustainable green technology.

The scope of cooperation includes: establishing and operating the joint research lab; conducting joint research and discovering future strategic technology projects; operating researcher exchange and education programs; expanding technology commercialization and industrial cooperation; and building a sustainable long-term partnership.

The Pusan National University-Fraunhofer Joint Lab is expected to strengthen Pusan National University's global research competitiveness, enable continuous exchanges with Germany's leading applied science research institution, generate innovation outcomes in future strategic technologies, and expand a new R&D ecosystem in connection with industries in the Busan region. This collaboration will be centered around K-FAST (Korea-Fraunhofer Science and Technology Cooperation Hub), with IKTS serving as the main contact point, and is expected to lay the foundation for expanding the consortium with the Fraunhofer Institute.

Choi Jaewon, President of Pusan National University, stated, "Cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute is an important milestone for Pusan National University in becoming a globally recognized research university. We will work together to solve future technological challenges through the joint research lab and achieve world-class research outcomes."

Alexander Michaelis, Director of IKTS at the Fraunhofer Institute, said, "Korea is the most strategically important country for Fraunhofer, and the partnership with Pusan National University is a meaningful starting point for elevating technological cooperation between the two countries. I expect the joint research lab will drive innovation in the industrial and research ecosystems of both countries."
