A Chinese men's clothing company has sparked controversy by attaching a sexist laundry label to its garments.
According to multiple media outlets including Guangming Net on November 25, a consumer recently noticed something odd on the laundry label of a brand-name garment he had purchased and posted about it on social media. The label, written in Chinese, read: "Let the woman you love wash this garment. She knows everything."
The consumer expressed dissatisfaction, saying, "Telling people to leave the laundry to women is a sexist remark that assumes women should do the washing," and added, "The English explanation is also strangely written."
Guangming Net reported that when they contacted the clothing company's customer service center, they were told, "The material is unique and can be easily damaged, so we wrote the label this way." The customer service representative explained, "Some men lack knowledge about the material, washing, and care of garments, but women tend to pay more attention to such details, which is why we included this message."
However, some Chinese men strongly objected to this explanation. In the comments, men wrote, "This is blatant discrimination against men," "Men know how to use a washing machine, so why assume we can't?" and "Assuming men know nothing is an even more sexist statement."
