The Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister and comprising relevant ministers and private sector experts, is a public-private joint deliberative and decision-making body. It is responsible for reviewing and monitoring national climate crisis response policies and carbon neutrality implementation plans. This visit was arranged as the Committee sought to identify exemplary domestic cases of carbon neutrality implementation and took particular interest in Murim's newly completed eco-friendly recovery boiler.

Murim's eco-friendly recovery boiler is a resource-circulating energy facility that uses biomass "black liquor," a byproduct of the pulp manufacturing process, as fuel to generate electricity and steam. The black liquor-based biomass energy system is the only one of its kind in Korea.

The Committee directly observed the process of converting black liquor into energy, the production of electricity and steam using this process, and the integrated pulp and paper manufacturing line-the only one in Korea that produces low-carbon products based on this energy. Committee members also exchanged opinions with Murim representatives.

By applying green energy produced from the recovery boiler to its manufacturing process, Murim P&P achieves an annual fossil fuel substitution effect equivalent to approximately 800,000 tons of greenhouse gases. Considering these positive effects, Murim has replaced its existing equipment with the new eco-friendly recovery boiler, which recently began full-scale operation.

The new facility, equipped with the latest performance and high efficiency, enables significantly increased energy production compared to previous systems. This is expected to save about 50 billion won in costs annually based on EBITDA, and the company can also generate additional revenue by selling surplus energy. Murim P&P plans to enhance profitability through these measures while also strengthening its foundation for future growth.

Murim CEO Lee Dokyun stated, "The eco-friendly recovery boiler at the Ulsan plant is a representative green facility that not only creates new value for the paper industry but also aligns with the government's carbon neutrality policy. We will maximize the use of biomass-based green energy to continue sustainable management that combines environmental friendliness and economic efficiency."
