Certification is awarded to organizations that achieve at least a third-grade rating. This year, Seongdong-gu was selected as an outstanding local government in the category for small and medium-sized cities with populations under 500,000, reaffirming its status as a ‘Smart Inclusive City.’
Seongdong-gu was the first in the nation to declare a vision for a ‘Smart Inclusive City’ and, as the first local government, established and has operated a dedicated division at the national level, the ‘Smart Inclusive City Bureau.’ It has promoted various smart initiatives, such as operating the ‘Seongdong-type Living Lab’ to reflect residents’ proposals in policy, building a sustainable smart city model in cooperation with IT and high-tech companies in Seongsu-dong, and leading the development of resident-oriented smart infrastructure such as the ‘Seongdong-type Smart Shelter,’ ‘Smart Crosswalk,’ and ‘Smart Smoking Booth.’
In particular, the ‘Seongdong-type Smart Shelter,’ introduced in 2020, has expanded to a total of 56 locations-28 medium-sized and 28 small-sized-surpassing 12.7 million cumulative users. Its international reputation has also grown, having received the Green World Award in the United Kingdom and the A’ Design Award in Italy. Additionally, Seongdong-gu has established a sustainable urban management model through the comprehensive adoption of smart technologies, including the ‘Seongdong-type Smart Crosswalk,’ ‘Smart Rainwater Inlet,’ and the ‘Smart City Integrated Operations Center.’
Mayor Jung Woonoh stated, “This certification is the result of collaboration among residents, businesses, and the administration, and it signifies that Seongdong-gu has established itself as a leading smart city in Korea. We will continue to expand practical, resident-oriented smart projects and strive to realize a ‘Smart Inclusive City’ where no one is left behind.”
