Gangwon Tourism Foundation and ISSS Join Hands for Successful Hosting of 2026 Pyeongchang International Academic Conference

The Gangwon Tourism Foundation (CEO Sung Hyun Choi) announced on the 1st that it had signed a business agreement with the International Society for Skiing Safety (ISSS) 2026 Organizing Committee (Chairman Seung Pyo Eun) on the 30th in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

This agreement was established to ensure the successful hosting of the 26th International Congress On Snowsports Trauma and Safety (ISSS 2026), which will be held in March 2026 in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. The two organizations agreed to jointly: establish a cooperative system for the smooth operation of the international academic conference; contribute to the development of the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province by supporting academic conferences and international events; attract international participants and conduct joint promotional activities; develop and operate programs linking academics and tourism; and promote sustainable event operations and expand community participation.

The International Society for Skiing Safety (ISSS) is a prestigious global academic conference that aims to reduce risks in snow sports and share injury treatment technologies. It brings together 350 participants from about 30 countries, including sports medicine experts, athletes, and equipment industry professionals. In particular, ISSS 2026 will be held in Pyeongchang for six days (March 8-13, 2026), with support from the Gangwon Tourism Foundation and Pyeongchang-gun, among others.

The event is also expected to generate positive economic ripple effects in the region.

According to an analysis by the Korea Tourism Organization’s Tourism Data Lab, the direct and indirect economic impact of ISSS 2026 is estimated to be approximately 1.1 billion won. The event is expected to create about 10 jobs and induce employment for about 6 people, while also positively affecting related industries such as local accommodation, transportation, and tourism.

Sung Hyun Choi, CEO of Gangwon Tourism Foundation, stated, "This agreement is expected to serve as an opportunity to elevate ISSS 2026 into a world-class academic event, combining Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province’s experience and infrastructure from successfully hosting the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics with the expertise of the society." He added, "As the Gangwon Tourism Foundation has been actively involved in attracting ISSS 2026, we will make every effort to provide systematic support during the hosting stage to ensure the international event is a success."
