Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Introduces AI Medical Review to Enhance Speed and Accuracy

Accuracy and Work Efficiency Enhanced
with Generative AI and OCR Technology

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance announced on August 21 that it has introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) medical review system to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of cancer diagnosis and surgical benefit assessments.

The newly implemented AI medical review system automatically analyzes a wide range of medical documents, including medical certificates, test results, and surgical records, based on vast medical data. By combining OCR (optical character recognition) technology with generative AI, the company has significantly shortened the traditional manual review process while simultaneously ensuring consistency and reliability in review outcomes.

For cancer diagnosis insurance payouts, a physician's certificate alone is not sufficient. Pathological and clinical data, such as biopsy and fine needle aspiration test results, must be thoroughly examined. Previously, reviewers had to interpret dozens of pages of documents themselves, resulting in lengthy processing times and inconsistencies in review duration.

Kim Gipyeong, Head of the Long-term Compensation AI Promotion Team at Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, stated, "By having AI perform alternative assessments, the proportion of manual reviews for cancer cases has decreased by approximately 55%, resulting in three key benefits: improved accuracy, increased work efficiency, and reduced business expenses." He added, "We plan to expand the application of AI beyond cancer to various other diseases and diagnostic fields in the future."

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance completed a patent application for its proprietary AI medical review system on August 19 to secure exclusive use of the technology.
