The lightweight 105mm self-propelled howitzer was developed through a rapid research and development project by the Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute, and it significantly improved both range and mobility compared to existing products. It has a maximum range of 18km, and its weight has been reduced by more than half compared to previous models, enabling it to be mounted on small tactical vehicles capable of reaching speeds of up to 100km/h. It can also be transported by large helicopters. The system is currently undergoing trial operation by the military for deployment, with the evaluation scheduled to be completed within this month.
Hyundai Wia also introduced an 'artificial intelligence (AI)-based intelligent remote weapon station' that can be mounted on various types of vehicles. This weapon system allows the operator to monitor the battlefield situation via an indoor monitor and to fire remotely. It is designed to accommodate a 7.62mm machine gun and a 5.56mm rifle, and it features an AI-based automatic tracking algorithm that greatly enhances firing accuracy. Through a rapid demonstration project, Hyundai Wia has met the suitability requirements of the existing RCWS and is currently in the process of deployment.
The company also exhibited a 'vehicle-mounted 81mm mortar.' By mounting the mortar, which was previously operated manually, on a vehicle, operational convenience and combat readiness time have been improved. The cooling time has been reduced from the previous 5 minutes to less than 10 seconds, and the number of operators required has been reduced from 5 to 3. In areas where vehicle access is difficult, the mortar can be dismounted and operated in the same way as conventional mortars.
Hyundai Wia aims to expand its defense business in Southeast Asia, leveraging its past export experience. From 2009 to 2015, Hyundai Wia exported 54 units of 105mm towed howitzers and 18 units of 155mm towed howitzers to Indonesia.
A Hyundai Wia representative stated, "This is the first exhibition where we are introducing Hyundai Wia's weapon systems to the Southeast Asian region," and added, "We will showcase Hyundai Wia's defense technology through mobile weapon systems based on mobility and operational efficiency."
