Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province is making efforts to expand and foster alley-type shopping districts by implementing a revised ordinance that relaxes the designation criteria for alley-type shopping districts.
According to the city, on the 9th, during the 275th extraordinary session of the Bucheon City Council, a partial amendment to the "Ordinance for the Promotion of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts in Bucheon City" was passed and will be promulgated and enforced on the 3rd of next month.
Previously, only areas within 2,000㎡ containing 30 or more small business stores densely clustered could be designated as alley-type shopping districts, but the amendment relaxes this to 25 stores in commercial areas and 20 stores outside commercial areas.
Additionally, when applying for designation as an alley-type shopping district, it is no longer necessary to submit consent documents from land and building owners.
Once designated as an alley-type shopping district, applicants can apply for Onnuri gift certificate membership and participate in national government projects for facility management modernization.
A Bucheon City official stated, "There were many opinions that meeting the previous criteria was practically difficult, so the ordinance was amended," and added, "We will strive to expand the new designation and foster alley-type shopping districts within the region to revitalize commercial areas."
