Hyundai Mobis announced on the 27th that it will collaborate with Autotalks, an Israeli semiconductor design specialist, to develop a 5G-based V2X (Vehicle to Everything) integrated controller. This technology enables real-time transmission of large volumes of data between vehicles or between vehicles and infrastructure, and is classified as a core technology for implementing Level 4 autonomous driving.
Hyundai Mobis succeeded in developing a 5G communication module for vehicles last year. This time, the company plans to lead the market with a new telematics product that integrates V2X technology, which provides various services during vehicle operation using wireless communication.
In the era of fully autonomous driving, vehicles must independently assess and control their driving environment. This is why 5G-based V2X technology, which allows high-speed data exchange with the surrounding environment even while on the move, is required. Although many mobility companies are accelerating their robo-taxi services, V2X functionality has not yet been commercialized.
Hyundai Mobis ultimately aims to develop integrated telematics technology optimized for the remote autonomous driving market. Utilizing this technology, a control tower can manage mobility in emergencies, making it an essential technology for robo-taxi operators. The integrated controller developed by Hyundai Mobis is also expected to bring changes to the vehicle's exterior design. Currently, telematics control units (TCUs) are attached to the rear of vehicles in the form of shark fin antennas. Hyundai Mobis plans to develop a flatter version that can be installed in an invisible location on the roof.
Autotalks, which supplies semiconductors for Hyundai Mobis's integrated controller, was established in 2008. Known for having industry-leading semiconductor design capabilities in the V2X field, the company was recently acquired by Qualcomm. Hyundai Mobis will begin developing technology that meets the latest specifications of the 5G-based V2X international standards in the second half of the year. Starting next year, it will also conduct marketing activities such as product presentations targeting global customers. Related technologies will be showcased at the IAA Mobility event held next month in Munich, Germany.
