[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority announced on the 28th that the "2022 Two-Wheeled Vehicle Traffic Safety Experience Education" will be held at the Gangnam Driver's License Practical Test Center every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday for two weeks from May 17 to 27.

This education program is jointly hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to reduce the increasing number of two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents due to the growth of the delivery industry. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the Road Traffic Authority are cooperating by providing the venue and promoting the project. The number of fatalities from two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents in Seoul increased by 28.2%, from 39 in 2018 to 50 in 2020, and the number of accidents increased by 19.8%, from 3,917 to 4,694 during the same period.

The main target of this two-wheeled vehicle traffic safety education is delivery riders, but any Seoul citizen who wants to directly experience and learn safe two-wheeled vehicle driving methods can participate free of charge. Applications for the education are accepted on the Korea Transportation Safety Authority's website learning center, and the application period is until the 6th.

The education is divided into morning and afternoon sessions, with each session lasting 3 hours. A professional instructor specializing in two-wheeled vehicle experience education from the Authority will provide focused education to small groups of about 20 people per session. The program is centered on hands-on experience where trainees directly participate, covering correct two-wheeled vehicle riding posture, braking methods, safe driving techniques, and ways to minimize injuries in case of traffic accidents.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority plan to conduct regular two-wheeled vehicle education sessions and will prepare courses in the second half of this year as well. Bae Jung-cheol, head of the Seoul branch of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, said, "We will further expand the two-wheeled vehicle traffic safety experience education model that utilizes minimal space in downtown Seoul," and added, "We hope delivery platform companies, delivery agencies, and delivery workers will take the lead in creating a safe two-wheeled vehicle delivery culture by complying with traffic laws and avoiding speed competition."

Kang Jin-dong, head of the Traffic Operation Division of Seoul City, said, "To avoid traffic accidents, it is essential for two-wheeled vehicle drivers themselves to obey traffic laws and drive safely," and added, "The city will work with the Authority and related organizations to regularly provide opportunities for two-wheeled vehicle traffic safety experience education."
