[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Rapper Killagram (Lee Jun-hee, 29), who was indicted for buying and smoking marijuana, has been sentenced to probation.
The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Chief Judge Sung Bo-gi) on the 16th sentenced Lee to one year in prison with a two-year probation and ordered 80 hours of community service in the verdict for violating the Narcotics Control Act.
The court explained the sentencing reason, saying, "Since there are no other prior convictions and it appears that marijuana was possessed and traded solely for smoking purposes, probation is granted as a leniency this time."
Earlier, in March, Lee was caught in the act by police who responded to a resident's report of a "smell of burning herbs" while he was smoking marijuana at his residence in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul.
Lee initially denied the charges during police investigation, but after the police found powdered marijuana and inhalers as evidence at his home and pressed him, he admitted to smoking marijuana.
After the arrest became public, he apologized through social media, saying, "As a public figure, I did something I absolutely should not have done."
If the verdict is finalized, Lee is expected to be deported. The Immigration Control Act allows for the forced deportation of foreigners who have been sentenced to imprisonment or higher and released from custody outside the Republic of Korea.
