[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] The group BTS has once again topped the US Billboard main singles chart with their new song. Combining this with their previous number one hit "Butter," they have secured the top spot on the Billboard chart for eight consecutive weeks.
On the 19th (local time), Billboard announced that BTS's third English single, "Permission to Dance," had reached number one on the main singles chart, the "Hot 100."
Released on the 9th of this month, "Permission to Dance" dethroned "Butter," which had held the number one spot for seven consecutive weeks. "Butter" ranked seventh.
As a result, BTS placed two songs in the top 10 of the Billboard singles chart.
This marks the first time in three years, since Drake in July 2018, that an artist has consecutively topped the chart with a new song following their previous number one hit.
On the "Digital Song Sales" chart, the song took first place, and it ranked eighth on the streaming chart. With this, BTS has produced their eighth number one on the Digital Song Sales chart, holding the record for the most among all group artists worldwide.
The Hot 100 ranks the most popular songs in the US based on digital downloads, physical album sales, streaming numbers, and radio airplay.
With "Permission to Dance" reaching number one on the Billboard singles chart, BTS has become a group with five number one songs, including "Dynamite," the remix of "Savage Love" (featuring participation), "Life Goes On," and "Butter."
Since first reaching number one with "Dynamite" at the end of August last year, BTS has produced five number one songs in just ten months.
This is the shortest period since the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson.
Michael Jackson placed five songs from his "Bad" album at the top of the Billboard charts over nine months and two weeks during 1987-88.
BTS achieved the feat of debuting four songs?"Dynamite," "Life Goes On," "Butter," and "Permission to Dance"?directly at number one on the Hot 100, Billboard reported. This is the fourth time after Ariana Grande (5 songs), Justin Bieber (4 songs), and Drake (4 songs).
"Permission to Dance," a new song included on the single CD with "Butter," involved the participation of world-renowned British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran in its composition.
The song is praised for its positive message unique to BTS, featuring a music video expressing hope for overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and performances incorporating international sign language.
BTS expressed their gratitude through their official Twitter account, saying, "'Permission to Dance,' which took over the baton from 'Butter,' both debuting at number one on the chart. Thank you," accompanied by heart-shaped emoticons.
