[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] CJ CheilJedang’s ‘Gourmet’ brand is pioneering the Chinese ready-to-eat meal (HMR) market.
CJ CheilJedang announced on the 18th that it has launched ‘Gourmet Crispy Chewy Sweet and Sour Pork.’ The company plans to create a market for Chinese-style fried dishes and build a lineup alongside Gourmet Jjamppong and Jjajang to grow ‘Gourmet Chinese Cuisine’ into a major category.
‘Gourmet Crispy Chewy Sweet and Sour Pork’ is a product that enhances the crispy texture of sweet and sour pork using CJ CheilJedang’s differentiated technology. First, a special batter was developed and applied based on CJ CheilJedang’s flour milling expertise. In particular, the product is fried to crispiness using ‘Multi-heating’ technology and then baked again in the oven. A major advantage is that it can be easily cooked at home in about 15 minutes using an air fryer, allowing consumers to enjoy freshly made crispy and chewy sweet and sour pork anytime.
The quality of the pork meat and sauce was also improved. Pork loin was cut into large, bite-sized pieces to enhance the meat’s texture by filling it tightly inside. The sauce contains plenty of fruits and vegetables and is crafted with the know-how of professional chefs to perfectly achieve a sweet and sour taste. Convenience was also enhanced through differentiated packaging technology. A specially developed steam pouch for the sauce allows the sauce packet to be safely heated in the microwave without bursting.
CJ CheilJedang thoroughly identified customer demands related to sweet and sour pork through digital big data analysis and consumer surveys. The Chinese cuisine dining-out market, estimated at about 7.4 trillion KRW, has been growing at an average rate of 5% over the past four years. Sweet and sour pork ranks just after jjamppong and jjajang in popularity.
The Chinese ready-to-eat meal market is still in its early stages, with no dominant products or brands yet. Accordingly, CJ CheilJedang plans to attract demand for Chinese cuisine in dining out and delivery with the differentiated taste quality of ‘Gourmet Crispy Chewy Sweet and Sour Pork.’ Furthermore, the company aims to develop it as an innovative product that breaks the perception that ‘Chinese cuisine is only for dining out and delivery.’
