[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Amorepacific announced on the 12th that it has developed a paper container technology that reduces plastic usage by about 70% compared to existing containers and can be distributed for up to 36 months.
Amorepacific deeply empathizes with the environmental issues caused by cosmetic containers and is carrying out various activities to reduce unnecessary plastic consumption. In January this year, the company actively joined the "2030 Cosmetics Plastic Initiative" declared by the Korea Cosmetic Association, which signifies efforts to solve plastic packaging problems and realize a sustainable circular economy, reflecting this commitment.
This development of paper tube container technology is also a result of efforts to reduce plastic use. Amorepacific has continuously pursued eco-friendly containers, having developed carbon emission reduction containers in 2010 and applied them to the Ryo brand products. The eco-friendly paper tube, completed with domestic technology, now has a mass production system in place. It is scheduled to be applied and launched in the first half of this year, replacing plastic tubes in the clean beauty brand Primera products.
There have been movements in the beauty industry to replace plastic containers. However, previously used paper tubes had limitations due to lower airtightness (the property of preventing gases such as air from passing through) compared to containers made of plastic or aluminum, resulting in shorter shelf life. Amorepacific combined nano thin-film barrier technology to replace cosmetic packaging tubes made of plastic or aluminum and developed the first domestically produced paper container capable of long-term distribution. Furthermore, the technology has reached a level applicable to functional ingredient products that require careful storage. Except for the cap area, where avoiding plastic use is difficult, the plastic usage in the body was drastically reduced by about 70% compared to existing containers using this technology. Meanwhile, airtightness was improved, allowing cosmetics to be used safely and securely for up to three years.
Park Young-ho, Head of Technology Research at Amorepacific, stated, “This technology is significant in that it commercializes a technology that overcomes the limitations of existing paper containers and ensures the quality of cosmetics even with long-term use.” He added, “We are also developing 100% compostable paper containers that guarantee shelf life, and we plan to continuously introduce eco-friendly packaging materials in the future.”
