[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Samsung Electronics is strengthening its eco-friendly strategy in the video display product sector.

On the 6th (local time), Samsung Electronics announced its TV business vision at the online event 'Samsung First Look 2021,' revealing plans to reduce carbon emissions through ▲expanding products with eco packaging ▲introducing eco-friendly remote controls using solar cells ▲using recycled plastics.

First, Samsung Electronics will expand the 'Eco Package,' previously applied to lifestyle TVs, to all 2021 models.

The Eco Package, introduced last year, incorporates the concept of upcycling into packaging materials discarded after TV delivery. The packaging box features dot patterns to easily create items such as cat houses and small furniture, and QR codes provide consumers with instructions for making various accessories.

Even if only one accessory is made per box for upcycling, it is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 10,000 tons.

Samsung also introduced a new eco-friendly remote control using solar cells. The solar cell remote control, applied to all 2021 QLED TV models, includes a solar panel within the remote itself, allowing use without disposable batteries.

Additionally, some models of Crystal UHD TVs offer power-saving remote controls that reduce power consumption by more than 80% compared to previous models.

Samsung Electronics expects that applying these eco-friendly remote controls will reduce the use of approximately 99 million disposable batteries over seven years and cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 14,000 tons.

The company also plans to continuously expand the use of recycled plastics, which have been used mainly for stands and back covers of monitors and signage.

Samsung Electronics estimates that using recycled plastics in video display products has already achieved a reduction of over 500 tons of greenhouse gases.

Through these efforts, the expected greenhouse gas reduction from eco-friendly items applied to video display products produced this year is approximately 25,000 tons. This amount is equivalent to the greenhouse gases absorbed in one year by 3.8 million 30-year-old pine trees.

Han Jonghee, President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business, said, "Corporate eco-friendly activities deliver value beyond the product to consumers and provide a better future. We will fulfill our responsibility as an industry leader through people-centered technological innovation and various efforts to protect the environment."
