[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] LG Electronics is set to establish a full premium TV lineup this year, led by next-generation OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode), QNED, and NanoCell.

According to LG Electronics on the 10th, the company will strengthen its global premium TV market strategy by spearheading a triangular formation ranging from self-lit OLED to premium LCD TV lineups such as LG QNED MiniLED, which applies proprietary high color reproduction technology called 'Quantum NanoCell Color Technology' and MiniLED, and LG NanoCell TV.

This year, LG Electronics' premium LCD TV lineup will newly include the LG QNED TV, which was unveiled at the end of last month. LG Electronics plans to launch around 10 QNED TV models globally, including 8K and 4K resolutions, mainly focusing on large-sized products.

The LG QNED TV, based on the 86-inch (approximately 218 cm diagonal) 8K (7680x4320) resolution model, is equipped with about 30,000 MiniLEDs in the backlight. The local dimming zones (screen partition driving areas) reach up to 2,500. An LG Electronics official stated, "This product has significantly upgraded brightness and contrast ratio," adding, "It uses all the representative high color reproduction technologies currently used in the industry, raising the color reproduction rate to the highest level among LCD TVs."

First Reveal of 'OLED evo' Equipped with Next-Generation Panel... OLED Mainstreaming Approaches Rapidly

LG Electronics is unveiling the 'OLED evo' (model name G1), equipped with a next-generation panel that enhances OLED element performance, for the first time.

OLED evo emits light with more precise wavelengths, delivering clearer image quality and brighter screens compared to previous models. The company explains that the picture quality of LG OLED TVs, which have been praised for delicate image quality, overwhelming contrast and black expression, and wide viewing angles, becomes even more perfect.

LG OLED TVs are based on picture quality achievable only by self-emitting pixels, and since their first launch in 2013, have evolved through ▲2015 4K (3840x2160) HDR (High Dynamic Range) OLED ▲2019 world’s first 8K (7680x4320) OLED ▲2021 OLED evo, among others.

All OLED TV models use OLED panels that meet 100% Color Fidelity, which evaluates color brightness, saturation, and hue between the original content and TV screen, certified by global testing and certification body Intertek.

Following the world’s first launch of a 48-inch OLED TV last year, LG Electronics will release a new 83-inch OLED TV this year. The number of ultra-large models over 70 inches in LG OLED TV’s lineup will increase from four last year to seven early this year. LG Electronics expects this year to be the first year of OLED mainstreaming, with the OLED TV market growing about twice as much as last year.

From 'Watching TV' to 'Customer-Driven Content Consumption TV'... Considering Viewers' Eye Health

LG Electronics has incorporated numerous trends reflecting the transformation of TVs from traditional audiovisual devices to devices for customers to actively consume diverse content in its new products.

Based on the latest software platform webOS 6.0, LG has newly upgraded the LG TV home screen. It has enhanced content recommendation functions tailored to customer preferences and displays lifestyle information such as necessary information for using the TV and weather.

Customer-tailored services are also strengthened, including ▲'Sports Alert,' which conveniently informs schedules, results, and details of preferred teams' games ▲'WWW (Who, Where, What, available in some countries),' which allows immediate search of actors, locations, and items appearing in the video being watched and connects to shopping.

When connected to the internet, LG Channels, which allows free viewing of various content without a separate set-top box, will also be upgraded. LG Electronics started the LG Channels service in 2015 and now offers about 1,600 channels in major global countries.

Customers can conveniently use voice recognition AI functions such as LG ThinQ, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa through the ergonomically redesigned AI remote control. Screen sharing between smartphones and TVs via NFC is also easily available.

LG Electronics is also strengthening eco-friendly and eye health elements in line with the trend of customers spending more time at home. As indoor activities increase, the preference for electronic products with low pollutants and health considerations is rising.

The 2021 LG OLED TV is equipped with panels certified by Swiss certification body SGS for ▲total volatile organic compound emissions known to cause sick building syndrome being less than half compared to LCD ▲no use of components containing carcinogens classified by international cancer research agencies such as cadmium and indium phosphide ▲excellent resource efficiency, covering various eco-friendly factors.

LG OLED TV’s blue light emission is reportedly only about half that of premium LCD TVs of the same size range. LG OLED TV has obtained 'Low Blue Light' and 'Flicker Free' certifications from Germany’s TUV Rheinland and the US UL, and further lowered blue light emissions to the industry’s lowest level, earning the 'Eye-Safe TV' certification from the US eye health certification body Eyesafe.

LG Electronics is also significantly enhancing eco-friendly elements in soundbar products used as a set with TVs. This year’s major new LG soundbar products use polyester yarn recycled from collected PET bottles and a large amount of recycled plastic. Packaging materials use only eco-friendly materials instead of Styrofoam (EPS).

Park Hyungse, head of LG Electronics’ HE Business Division, said, "We will further solidify our leadership in the premium TV market by leading with the triangular formation of self-emitting OLED, as well as premium LCD TVs such as QNED and NanoCell."
