[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu City (Mayor Kwon Oh-bong) announced on the 26th that it has installed a pedestrian-centered diagonal crosswalk at Yeoseo-dong Intersection (former Songwon Department Store) and began operation from the day before.
According to Yeosu City, to create a pedestrian-centered safe traffic environment, it selected Yeoseo-dong Intersection, where pedestrian traffic is heavy, after comprehensive review of traffic conditions, pedestrian demand, and on-site conditions in consultation with Yeosu Police Station and the Korea Road Traffic Authority.
The commonly seen "straight crosswalk" at urban intersections focuses on vehicle-centered traffic flow, causing inconvenience due to long waiting times for pedestrians.
The diagonal crosswalk installs an X-shaped crosswalk in addition to the existing crosswalks, allowing pedestrians to cross straight or diagonally at once when the vehicle traffic light turns red, making it convenient.
A city official said, "We expect the convenience and satisfaction of pedestrians to increase significantly," and added, "We plan to expand the installation of diagonal crosswalks in the future to enhance pedestrian safety and convenience."
