[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The comprehensive medical facilities at Gangnam Severance Hospital will be expanded.
On the 23rd, Seoul City announced that on the 22nd, it held the Urban Architecture Joint Committee meeting and revised the district unit planning area and plan decision for the area around 146-92 Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu, Gangnam Severance Hospital.
Opened in 1983, Gangnam Severance Hospital is managed as a comprehensive medical facility among urban planning facilities and is one of the 13 tertiary general hospitals in Seoul.
After the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in 2015, the 2017 revision of the Medical Service Act Enforcement Rules required the expansion of inpatient rooms and intensive care units, as well as the mandatory installation of negative pressure isolation rooms. However, Gangnam Severance Hospital had already exceeded the ordinance floor area ratio, making it difficult to expand and modernize hospital facilities.
Accordingly, through this district unit plan, the hospital will expand by purchasing land on the east and west sides of the hospital, and by donating and dedicating the southern park land of the hospital (33,799㎡), the floor area ratio will be increased, allowing the expansion of necessary hospital facilities.
A Seoul city official expressed expectations that "this decision will improve the level of medical services by expanding isolation rooms to strengthen infectious disease response, increasing socially insufficient hospital facilities such as neonatal intensive care units, and enhancing emergency medical systems to the level of regional emergency medical centers."
