Elementary School to Be Named After Custodian Who Devoted 39 Years to Students
New elementary school named after custodian who served 39 years
Provided school supplies and academic support to students in need
Superintendent: "She may not have had the title of teacher, but she was an educator"
A school district in Texas is drawing attention for deciding to name a newly established elementary school after a woman who spent 39 years working as a school custodian and caring for students. In addition to cleaning schools and maintaining their facilities, she reportedly provided school supplies and lunch money to students in need and helped them with their studies.
On November 7 local time, The Washington Post, The Guardian and other outlets reported that the Aubrey Independent School District’s board had voted on October 21 to name a new elementary school Marilyn Hampton Elementary School. The district had been using “Elementary School No. 5” as a temporary name while building its fifth elementary school.
The district invited Hampton to a board meeting, saying it would discuss school-related matters. At the meeting, Superintendent Shannon Saylor told her, “I have one last custodial task to ask of you,” and asked her to unroll a red carpet. It bore the name “Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.” When Hampton realized that the new school had been named after her, she was moved to tears.

She went on to work at the school for 39 years, cleaning and maintaining its facilities, and stayed with the students until her retirement in 2022.
Hampton’s role went beyond her official duties. She gave pencils and notebooks to students whose families could not afford school supplies and helped households that needed money for lunches or groceries. She tutored students preparing for exams and stepped in when a child was being bullied. Once, she used a sewing machine to mend a student’s pants after the child came to her in tears wearing a torn pair.
Hampton said she had nearly dropped out of high school herself because she could not afford school supplies. “Because I remember what it was like to struggle financially, I couldn’t just walk away when students couldn’t get the things they needed,” she explained.
“Hampton didn’t have the official title of teacher, but she was an educator and mentor to the students,” Superintendent Saylor said, calling her “the Aubrey Independent School District itself.” District board members also said she had made an impact on generations of students and families.
Hampton has stayed connected with the district since retiring. She cares for young children at a district learning center and takes part in various community activities. The new school named after her is scheduled to open in August 2027.

In an interview with local media, Hampton said, “Who would have ever thought there would be a school named after a custodian? It’s an honor I never imagined.” Asked what she hoped students would learn at the new school, she said, “I hope they’ll be kind. And I hope they’ll have all the school supplies they need.”
