"No more than one failure per 100 million hours"... LG Electronics Earns Top Safety Certification for Vehicle Communication Control Module
Proves safety in mass-production vehicles with installation in Genesis 'GV90'
Serves as a central hub connecting data inside and outside the vehicle
Targets automotive components business with 5G telematics and V2X
LG Electronics has demonstrated its technological competitiveness by securing the highest global functional safety certification for its vehicle communication control module.
LG Electronics said on November 8 that it recently received ASIL D certification for its vehicle communication control module from global testing and certification body TUV Rheinland. ASIL D is the highest level under the international automotive functional safety standard ISO 26262. As of this month, LG Electronics is the first company in the industry to receive ASIL D certification for a vehicle communication control module.

It connects multiple electronic control units (ECUs) inside the vehicle and relays various types of data, including status information and control commands, to the devices that need them. Connected to external networks, it supports a range of connected-car services, including remote control and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Key signals directly related to driving safety, such as braking and steering, also pass through the module. Therefore, advanced functional safety capabilities are essential to immediately detect and contain errors or failures.
LG Electronics met stringent safety standards across product design, software implementation, and functional verification. The module is installed in the GV90, a full-size flagship electric SUV from Hyundai Motor's Genesis brand. The certification is significant because it formally recognizes the highest level of safety in a component used in a mass-production vehicle. Building on this certification, LG Electronics plans to step up efforts to win orders for automotive components from global automakers.
ASIL is a metric that assesses the severity of the impact of vehicle system failures on safety and divides them into four levels, from A to D. The highest level, ASIL D, requires compliance with stringent standards that limit failures capable of causing an accident to no more than one per 100 million hours of continuous operation.
LG Electronics is advancing its vehicle communication capabilities based on its telematics technology, which ranks No. 1 in global market share, according to market research firm TechInsights. Recently, it became the first in the industry to supply a smart telematics solution based on R16, the latest 5G communications standard, for a European automaker's mass-production model. In response to the global requirement for emergency call systems in vehicles, it also introduced a next-generation hybrid emergency call system that supports networks from 2G to 5G. At the ITS World Congress held last month in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, the company successfully demonstrated an integrated traffic safety solution combining V2X and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications in real-world driving conditions.
