Mokpo City-Jeonnam Sports Council Cooperation Pays Off
Hopes Rise for Revival of Local Boxing Powerhouse

Jang Donghwan, a national team boxer and silver medalist at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, will join the Mokpo City Hall boxing team in Jeonnam-Gwangju starting in 2027.

With the addition of a top-level athlete who has proven his mettle on the international stage, the team is expected to strengthen its lineup and gain momentum in restoring the reputation of Mokpo boxing, which once dominated the national scene.

The signing came about through a combination of Mokpo City’s commitment to strengthening its professional team and the active support of Song Jinho, chairman of the Jeonnam Sports Council.

Song is said to have worked hard to bring Jang onto the team, aiming to prevent talented athletes from leaving the region and to boost the competitiveness of Jeonnam boxing. Mokpo City also actively pursued the signing to invigorate local sports and rebuild the city’s reputation as a boxing powerhouse.

Joo Donghyeon, chairman of the Jeonnam Boxing Association, is also said to have helped bring the signing to fruition by working to develop athletes and improve their performance while fostering cooperation among the organizations involved.

Jeonnam boxing recently demonstrated its strength at the National Sports Festival, winning two gold medals and five bronze medals. With the addition of an Asian Games silver medalist, expectations are also rising for improved results by the Mokpo City Hall boxing team at national competitions.

A local sports official said, “Jang Donghwan’s joining Mokpo City Hall is the result of Mokpo City and the Jeonnam Sports Council joining forces to develop local sports,” adding, “We hope that bringing in a talented athlete will help Mokpo boxing once again rise to the top tier nationally.”
