Gaon Cable Wins Saemangeum Floating Solar 154 kV Transmission Grid Contract... Supplies and Installs Extra-High-Voltage Cables
Interconnection for a 73.2 MW floating solar project in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province
Targeting renewable energy markets at home and abroad, including offshore wind
Gaon Cable is accelerating its push into the renewable energy grid market, including floating solar power and offshore wind.
Gaon Cable announced on November 6 that it had signed a contract with BS Hanyang to supply and install 154-kilovolt (kV) extra-high-voltage cables for the Saemangeum Sunlight Sharing Project.
The Saemangeum Sunlight Sharing Project is a project to build a 73.2-megawatt (MW) floating solar power facility in the area around Okgu-eup, Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. Gaon Cable will both supply and install 154 kV extra-high-voltage cables to connect electricity generated at the power complex to the external power grid.
The contract has further expanded Gaon Cable's scope of work. Following its earlier contract to supply distribution cables within the same complex, the company will now also handle construction of the external transmission network. This demonstrates its ability to carry out integrated power grid construction for floating solar infrastructure, covering everything from internal distribution to external transmission.
Gaon Cable has continued to build a track record of supplying equipment for renewable energy grids. In 2023, the company supplied cables for the Bigeumdo onshore solar power project and the interconnection network for Jeonnam Offshore Wind Farm Phase 1. In 2024, it successfully delivered aluminum-clad (ACF) cables for the Seokmun Lake floating solar power project and the internal distribution network of the Saemangeum Sunlight Sharing Project.
The Sunlight Sharing Project is a key part of the Saemangeum floating solar project, which is being developed with a total capacity of 2.1 gigawatts (GW). Building on this contract, Gaon Cable plans to expand its participation in power grid interconnection projects for offshore wind and solar power complexes in Korea and overseas, including follow-up projects in Saemangeum.
