Naju Artificial Sun Research Facility Passes Preliminary Feasibility Study... 1.48 Trillion Won Project
Design and Technology Development for a 100-MW Fusion Demonstration Reactor
Facility to Employ More Than 2,000 Research Personnel
Site to Be Provided by 2028; Facility to Be Built in Wangok-myeon by 2036
A research facility to develop the design and core technologies for a 100-MW Korean Innovative Fusion Demonstration Reactor will be built in the Wangok-myeon area of Naju by 2036. On November 5, the project to build the artificial sun research facility, with a total budget of 1.48 trillion won, passed the national preliminary feasibility study.
Fusion is a technology that harnesses the principle by which the sun produces energy. The Naju research facility will develop the design and core technologies needed to build the Korean Innovative Fusion Demonstration Reactor, which will demonstrate this technology.

The facility is expected to employ more than 2,000 research personnel. Once it is built, up to around 3,000 domestic and international researchers are expected to visit Naju each year.
Research and development cooperation is also expected with regional energy institutions, including Korea Electric Power Corporation and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH). These efforts are expected to attract related companies, train professionals, and create local jobs.
