This was Anseong City’s first study to examine the overall lives of young people, including youth activities, psychological and emotional well-being, family relationships, school life, and welfare. The Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Hankyong National University conducted a survey of 1,044 elementary, middle, and high school students in the city across four areas: individuals and families; peers and schools; and local communities. It also conducted in-depth interviews with 27 people, including practitioners working with multicultural and foreign youth, young people outside the school system, and socially isolated and reclusive youth.
The survey identified strengthening school violence prevention and response systems as a key priority. The rate of reported experience with school violence was higher than in a nationwide comparative survey that used the same questions. Participants also said tailored welfare support was needed to address young people’s psychological and emotional difficulties and the various crises they face.
The survey found that 88.2% of respondents had participated in youth activities and 54.5% had used youth facilities. Factors that made participation difficult included a lack of activities they wanted to take part in, time constraints, and difficulty accessing information. The findings pointed to the need to expand programs that reflect young people’s needs and improve the conditions for participation.
At the briefing, participants discussed whether the policy measures proposed by the research team matched local conditions and needs in the field. The city asked relevant departments and organizations to review the findings and provide feedback from the field, noting that youth policy is linked to various areas, including education and welfare.
