Jeong Jeomsik: Talks on Special Prosecutor Act on Fabricated Indictments Fail; Filibuster on All Items if Tabled
People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik said on the 4th, regarding whether to place items such as the Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Indictments on the National Assembly plenary session agenda, “We discussed the matter for 30 minutes with the ruling and opposition parties, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik, but the talks came to nothing.” He added, “If these items are placed on the agenda, we will have no choice but to hold unlimited debates (filibusters) on every item.”
After a meeting between the ruling and opposition parties’ floor leaders, chaired by Speaker Cho at the National Assembly that afternoon, Jeong told reporters, “The Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Indictments was passed unilaterally without an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties or consultations within the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee, so we strongly protested to the Democratic Party,” adding that the talks had failed.
The six bills proposed by the ruling party are the Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Indictments, the Democratic Meritorious Persons Act, the Special Act on Promoting Urban Renewal, the Act on the Maintenance and Improvement of Urban Areas and Dwelling Conditions, the Special Act on the Creation of Yongsan Park, and a resolution to form a Special Committee on Ultra-Wide-Area Strategic Industry Zones for Region-Led Growth.
Regarding the matter, Jeong said, “Although the Democratic Party did not include it among the six bills, it also included a resolution urging disciplinary action against Assemblyman Kim Tae-gyu,” adding, “So in practice, there are seven items.” The ruling party is seeking to adopt the resolution, arguing that Assemblyman Kim disparaged the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement on a YouTube program.
Jeong also took aim at Speaker Cho, saying, “When Woo Won-shik was National Assembly Speaker, bills passed unilaterally were at least not placed on the very next plenary session’s agenda.” He added, “If Speaker Cho places this bill on the agenda, the National Assembly will be run in a way that is even more centered on the Democratic Party than it was under Speaker Woo.”

Meanwhile, when asked to apologize following the appellate court’s dismissal of the case involving former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s alleged violation of the Public Official Election Act, Jeong said, “It is, quite literally, only the second trial; the Supreme Court case is still pending.” He added, “President Lee Jae-myung had his case reversed and remanded by the Supreme Court on grounds pointing to guilt. Has the Democratic Party ever apologized for that?”
