Musical "School of Rock" to Make Korean-Language Debut... Open Audition for Child Actors
Ages 8 to 12; applications accepted through Nov. 25
Child actors to be selected to play guitar, drums and other instruments themselves
An open audition for child actors will be held ahead of the first Korean-language production of the musical "School of Rock."
Production company S&Co. announced on November 4 that it is recruiting child actors for the Korean-language production of "School of Rock" through 6 p.m. on November 25. The production plans to select young performers with a range of talents, from playing instruments to singing, acting and dancing.
"School of Rock" is a musical based on the 2003 film of the same name starring Jack Black. Andrew Lloyd Webber, the composer behind musicals including "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Cats," composed and produced the show.
The story follows Dewey Finn, a rock musician who poses as his friend Ned and takes a temporary teaching job at the prestigious private school Horace Green. There, he discovers his students' musical talents and forms a rock band with them.
Lloyd Webber completed the musical by adding 14 newly composed songs to three tracks from the original film, including "School of Rock." The show has been performed in Korea as part of two world tours, in 2019 and 2024, but this will be its first Korean-language production.
One of the show's biggest highlights is that the child actors playing Horace Green students perform the instruments featured in the show, including guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. The young performers lead the show with their outstanding playing skills, as well as their singing, acting and dancing. Despite their small stature, they skillfully handle instruments larger than themselves and win cheers from the audience with their impressive stage presence, making them another group of stars in the production.
Applicants must be 8 to 12 years old as of November 2026 (born between December 2013 and November 2018), shorter than 152 cm and not yet have begun puberty-related voice changes. Applications, including documents and videos, will be accepted through November 25. Final candidates will be selected after in-person auditions and workshops in January 2027.
The selected actors will begin preparing for the production in May 2027. In May and June, they will receive basic training focused on playing instruments once or twice a week. During summer vacation in July and August, they will have intensive rehearsals in singing, acting, choreography and band practice five or six times a week. They will take part in full rehearsals from October through December.
