STMicroelectronics is a Switzerland-based integrated semiconductor company. A global leader in the power semiconductor field, it operates in more than 40 countries worldwide. It has 14 manufacturing facilities in nine countries and employs around 49,000 people, including more than 9,600 research staff.
At the meeting, Mayor Lee heard about the company's business and vision and introduced Yongin's semiconductor projects, which are seeing large-scale investments from Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
"Power semiconductors will be used more widely across various fields as electric vehicle adoption grows and data centers become increasingly important in the age of artificial intelligence (AI)," Mayor Lee said. "I hope STMicroelectronics will play a greater role in Korea as well."
He added, "Investment by semiconductor-related companies continues in Yongin, and the semiconductor ecosystem is continuing to expand. Once the mega-projects by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are completed, Yongin will have the world's largest semiconductor ecosystem within a single city."
