The operation targeted areas of Miryang with large foreign-national populations, as well as entertainment bars, karaoke bars, and massage businesses employing foreign nationals that were considered at high risk for crime.
The crackdown was carried out as part of the comprehensive public safety plan, “Miryang Safe Plus.” More than 70 people from relevant agencies took part, including Miryang Police Station, the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, Miryang City Hall, and the Busan-Ulsan Immigration Office.
The joint task force conducted intensive inspections to ease residents’ heightened concerns about public safety following recent serious crimes involving foreign nationals in the area and to prevent related crimes.
The operation uncovered 17 people at three businesses that had engaged in illegal activities, including employing undocumented foreign nationals who had not undergone health examinations to serve customers. Those apprehended included 14 undocumented foreign nationals, two business owners who had illegally employed them, and one business owner who violated the Food Sanitation Act.
The 14 undocumented foreign nationals apprehended were handed over to the immigration office. Miryang City Hall’s Sanitation Division was asked to take administrative action against the business that violated the Food Sanitation Act.
Miryang Police Station plans to eliminate illegal activities in the area and create a safe environment where residents can go about their lives with peace of mind through follow-up management of the businesses caught in the crackdown and ongoing on-site inspections.
Cheon Seungjun, chief of Miryang Police Station, said, “Recent intensive, high-visibility patrols and ongoing inspections and crackdowns have significantly curbed the climate for crime in areas of Miryang with large foreign-national populations. We will continue to eliminate illegal activities in the community through ongoing on-site inspections and follow-up management.”
