The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on Nov. 1 that it had appointed Kim Sewoong, former vice president and AI Synergy Performance Leader at Kakao, as head of the National AI Service Innovation Promotion Task Force.

After founding and managing technology startup Mightyworks in 2009, Kim gained extensive experience and organizational management expertise at Kakao across the AI service sector, including AI technology development, service commercialization and infrastructure development.

The ministry said, "He is considered the best person to quickly stabilize the task force and drive rapid results in service development."

The National AI Service Innovation Promotion Task Force was established this year to develop and provide AI services that the public can experience, drawing on private-sector innovation and public-sector accountability. Unlike development approaches centered on outsourcing, the task force is led by 26 private-sector developers hired as fixed-term civil servants and "AI Champions" with AI development capabilities in the public sector. It directly identifies public needs, solves problems and develops services.

Kim's term begins on Nov. 2 and runs through Sept. 30, 2028.

"AI innovation that people can experience begins not with introducing new technology, but with actually solving inconveniences they encounter in their daily lives," Kim said, outlining his goals for the role. "Drawing on the AI technology and service development experience I have built in the private sector, I will combine the speed and innovativeness of the private sector with public-sector accountability to quickly deliver AI services that provide tangible benefits to the public."

Along with the task force's full-scale launch, additional recruitment of private-sector specialists is scheduled to begin in early November to strengthen its AI service development capabilities.
