Na Kyungwon: "Early Voting Must Be Abolished... The More the Ruling Party Digs In, the More Conflict Will Intensify"
Cites controversy over ballot verification in special prosecutor's probe
"Post-election verification cannot end the vicious cycle"
Urges ruling party to institutionalize abolition of early voting
Na Kyungwon, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, urged the ruling party on October 31 to move forward with related legislation, saying, "Early voting must be abolished."
In a social media post that day, Na said, "The process of verifying ballots from Olympic Park as part of the special prosecutor's investigation into the National Election Commission is giving rise to further distrust and controversy," adding, "An investigation that should resolve public doubts is instead deepening confusion."
She continued, "No matter how meticulously ballots are verified after the fact, this vicious cycle will not end," and argued, "The election system itself must be changed."
Referring to the People Power Party's introduction of a bill to abolish early voting as a party platform, Na stressed, "Now is the time to move toward institutionalizing it."
She criticized the early voting system, saying it "causes a serious information gap among voters" and that "some voters end up casting their ballots without knowing about candidates' disqualifying issues, verification results, and debate content that emerge in the final days of the campaign."
She also cited as problems the fact that early voting takes place during the official campaign period, meaning candidates are not given the full campaign period, and that election officials do not personally stamp ballots with their official seal.

Na argued, "The more the ruling party digs in and refuses to abolish early voting, the more public conflict will intensify," adding, "Immediately abolishing early voting is the minimum first step toward institutionally addressing the problems with this June 3 election."
