The event will focus on “The Future of the Goyang Art Festival as an Art Hub for Northern Gyeonggi.”
The event is part of the “2026 Northern Gyeonggi Regional Culture Specialization Support Project.” As the Goyang Art Festival, which began with Goyang’s art resources, expands its participation to include artists and exhibition spaces across northern Gyeonggi, the event will examine the state of the local art scene and explore directions for the festival’s development.
The event will be divided into two parts: research presentations and a panel discussion.
In the first part, Kim Youngho, an emeritus professor at Chung-Ang University and honorary president of the Korean Society of Museum Studies, will deliver a keynote presentation titled “Directions for Developing the Goyang Art Festival: Beyond Goyang, an Art Platform Connecting Northern Gyeonggi.” He will present ways to develop the festival from an event serving a single area into a platform that fosters exchange and collaboration across the northern Gyeonggi art scene.
Next, Na Yongsoo, chair of Seoul National University’s Department of Nuclear Engineering, will give a special lecture titled “In the Age of AI, Where Does Beauty Come From?” The lecture will revisit the meaning of art and beauty amid advances in artificial intelligence.
A research presentation examining the state of the northern Gyeonggi art scene will also be held. Park Miyeon, director of Museum Hodu, will present “A Study of the Visual Artists in Northern Gyeonggi: Their Current Status and the Characteristics and Trends of the Art Scene.” Kim Sunyoung, a professor in the Department of Arts and Cultural Management at Hongik University’s Graduate School, will analyze the development potential of regional art festivals in a presentation titled “The Role and Direction of the Goyang Art Festival as an Art Hub for Northern Gyeonggi.”
The second part will discuss ways for local art institutions to collaborate and connect. Kim Yeonjae, a professor in the Department of Art Theory at the School of Visual Arts, Korea National University of Arts, will moderate the discussion. The panelists will be Lee Gyeyeong, director of Yangju City Art Museum; Jung Heera, head of the curatorial team at Art Center White Block; and Hwang Rokju, head of the Creative Support Team at Gyeonggi Creation Campus, Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation.
Drawing on their institutions’ operational experience, participants will assess the state of the northern Gyeonggi art scene and discuss ways to expand exchanges between local artists and art institutions.
The Goyang Art Festival began with art resources in the Goyang area and has expanded participation to include artists and venues across northern Gyeonggi. The academic event will review the festival’s achievements to date and examine the challenges involved in developing it into an art platform that connects artistic resources across the region.
The “Northern Gyeonggi Regional Culture Specialization Support Project,” run by Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation, aims to discover and foster distinctive cultural and artistic content by drawing on local history, cultural resources, and unique characteristics. It seeks to reinterpret local cultural resources through performances, exhibitions, and festivals, and develop them into sustainable cultural content.
The academic event will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free. After the event, participants can visit the exhibition “Spanish Masters of Art - Picasso, Miro, Dali: Opening the Door to 20th-Century Graphic Art” at Goyang Aram Art Museum free of charge that day.
