Kia raised its global market share to 4.0% in the third quarter of 2026, marking a record high. Electrified vehicle sales, led by electric vehicles and hybrids, rose 47%, while Kia also achieved record quarterly market shares in the United States and South Korea. The company plans to address the pressure on profitability from expanding EV sales by reducing the cost of key components and achieving economies of scale.
Kia held a conference call on its third-quarter 2026 results and announced on October 30 that consolidated revenue reached KRW 31.5974 trillion and operating profit totaled KRW 1.8183 trillion. Revenue rose 10.1% and operating profit increased 24.3% from the same period in 2025. The operating margin was 5.8%, up 0.7 percentage points. Net profit fell 9.6% to KRW 1.2855 trillion.
Global wholesale sales in the third quarter of 2026 rose 7.9% year over year to 847,355 vehicles. Domestic sales totaled 141,013 vehicles, while overseas sales reached 706,342. Global retail sales rose 6.9% to 829,000 vehicles. Sales declined in Africa and the Middle East, but increases in key markets, including South Korea, the United States and Western Europe, supported overall performance.
Kia's global market share reached 4.0%, a record high. Its market share excluding China was 5.0%. In South Korea, industry demand fell 10.7% year over year, but Kia's retail sales rose 2.2% to 141,000 vehicles. Its market share increased 4.6 percentage points to 36.8%, a record for a quarter.
Kia also gained market share in the contracting U.S. market. U.S. industry demand fell 1.3% in the third quarter of 2026, but Kia's local sales rose 7.8% to 234,000 vehicles. Its market share was 5.8%, a quarterly record. Strong sales of key models, including the Telluride Hybrid and the Sportage and Carnival hybrids, contributed to the increase. Sales in Western Europe rose 16.9% to 145,000 vehicles, while sales in India grew 38.5% to 89,000. Kia's global market share for the first three quarters of 2026 was 4.0%, up 0.4 percentage points from the same period in 2025.
Revenue growth was driven by higher sales volume and an improved average selling price (ASP), reflecting a larger share of eco-friendly vehicles in the sales mix. Operating profit benefited from a base effect of approximately KRW 530 billion related to adjustments to U.S. auto tariffs, KRW 442 billion from increased sales volume, and KRW 529 billion from foreign exchange effects. In contrast, higher raw material prices weighed on profit by KRW 368 billion, while sales disruptions related to the conflict in the Middle East resulted in a KRW 209 billion impact. The effect of EV incentives and price cuts totaled KRW 727 billion.
Electrified Vehicle Sales Up 47%...Growth in Both EVs and Hybrids
Electrified vehicle sales continued to grow. Kia's third-quarter 2026 retail sales of electrified vehicles (xEVs) reached approximately 300,000, up 47% from the same period in 2025. They accounted for 36.2% of total sales, an increase of 9.8 percentage points. Electric vehicle (EV) sales rose 75.4% to 123,000, while hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales increased 46% to 172,000.
By region, Kia sold 63,000 EVs in Western Europe. EVs accounted for 43.2% of its sales there, up sharply from 19.2% in the same period of 2025. In South Korea, EV sales totaled 23,000, or 23% of total sales, up 8.1 percentage points from 14.9% in the third quarter of 2025.
Hybrid sales stood out in the United States. Kia sold 69,000 HEVs there in the third quarter of 2026, up 118% from the same period in 2025. This far exceeded the market's growth rate of 27% over the same period. Kia's share of the hybrid market rose 4.4 percentage points to 10.6%. It was the first time Kia had achieved a double-digit market share since it began selling hybrids in the United States in 2011.
Kia plans to continue expanding electrified vehicle sales in the fourth quarter of 2026. In South Korea, it aims to increase sales, focusing on the Seltos Hybrid and the Sorento and Carnival hybrids. In the United States, it plans to introduce the Seltos Hybrid. In Western Europe, it will seek to boost sales by leveraging its full lineup of EVs. Kia aims to increase EV sales in Western Europe by 79% this year compared with 2025 and raise EVs' share of total sales to 33%.
EV Cost Cuts to Improve Profitability...Kia Weighs Localizing Production in Europe
Kia plans to address the pressure on profitability from expanding EV sales through cost reductions and economies of scale. Over the next three years, the company aims to lower the cost of key EV components, including motors and heat pumps as well as batteries, by approximately 10% per year. Kia expects that once EV incentives normalize and sales volumes grow, EVs can achieve profitability on par with hybrids within two to three years.
Kia believes it would be unwise to slow its sales expansion strategy because of short-term profitability pressures, given the growth prospects of the EV market. It believes that building a foundation for EV sales is particularly important in Europe, where maintaining market competitiveness would be difficult without one. The company said that securing competitiveness in EVs is important over the medium to long term, especially as Chinese EVs now account for more than 50% of the market.
A Kia official said on the conference call, "The key to improving EV profitability is cost reduction and economies of scale. Hybrids also initially struggled to achieve profitability and sales volume, but they are now as profitable as internal combustion engine vehicles." The official added, "We expect EVs to follow the same path."
Kia is also considering expanding local production in Europe. The company is internally assessing options such as increasing EV production at its plant in Slovakia and producing internal combustion engine vehicles in South Korea. However, it has not yet finalized its localization targets, specific production plans, volumes or timing.
Kia will also continue developing smart-car and autonomous driving technologies according to its existing plans. It remains on track to introduce vehicles equipped with the technologies between late 2027 and early 2028, and plans to present its initial technologies in collaboration with NVIDIA. The company intends to gather vehicle data and advance its autonomous driving models, starting at Level 2++ and developing the technology in stages.
Kia maintained its annual sales target of 3.35 million vehicles. Although geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East persists, the company left its guidance unchanged, also taking into account the possibility that the situation could ease quickly. It expects its operating margin in the fourth quarter of 2026 to be little changed from the third quarter. Kia also left its medium- to long-term targets unchanged for now, including achieving a 10% operating margin by 2030.

Kia will also continue its shareholder return policy. The company plans to honor its existing commitments, including a minimum dividend of KRW 6,000 per share and share buybacks equivalent to 10% of its shares. However, it plans to prioritize dividends over share buybacks and cancellations.
