No More Double-Parking Stress... Hyundai Motor Group Shares Parking Robot Pilot Results
Vehicles Entering and Exiting Simultaneously, Double-Parking Resolution, and Temporary Vehicle Retrieval
Demonstration of Scenarios Based on Real Residential Environments
Smart Parking Control System Developed to Manage Up to 200 Robots Simultaneously
Expansion to Commercial and Office Facilities Under Consideration
Hyundai Motor Group demonstrated parking robot operations at an actual apartment complex parking lot and shared the results of its pilot project. Having confirmed the potential for using parking robots in residential spaces, the group plans to expand their application to transportation hubs and commercial facilities.
Hyundai Motor Group said on October 30 that it had held a demonstration event at Hillstate The Wave City in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, to share the results of an apartment complex parking robot pilot project being carried out by a consortium of Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Wia, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction.
The pilot project was conducted through the Smart City Regulatory Sandbox. It is the first case in South Korea of operating parking robots in an actual apartment complex parking area with 50 or more spaces. Representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement, local governments, and public institutions attended the event and observed the operation on site.
Hyundai Motor Group demonstrated three scenarios reflecting situations that may arise in apartment complexes: vehicles entering and exiting at the same time, resolving double parking, and temporary vehicle retrieval.
In the scenario involving vehicles entering and exiting at the same time, the group showed how parking robots efficiently move vehicles when requests to enter and exit occur simultaneously. In particular, it demonstrated a feature that links the parking robot with the wall pad in a residential unit, moving a vehicle to the exit area when a resident requests its retrieval through the wall pad. The retrieval process took about three minutes.
In the double-parking resolution scenario, parking robots moved and repositioned vehicles to make room for other vehicles to pass. The group explained that this makes it possible to use limited parking spaces more efficiently.
The temporary vehicle retrieval scenario simulated situations in which someone needs to retrieve an item from a vehicle or use it briefly. The parking robot temporarily moves the vehicle and then returns it to its designated parking space.

This approach integrates overall parking lot operations by connecting the complex's entrance barrier, residential unit wall pads, and an artificial intelligence (AI)-based vehicle inspection system.
The group also upgraded its smart parking control system, which manages parking robot routes and vehicle dispatch. The currently developed version 2.0 can control up to 200 parking robots simultaneously.
Hyundai Motor Group plans to establish the technologies and operating standards required for on-site deployment based on data collected during the pilot project. It is also considering expanding the areas where the robots can be used beyond apartment complexes to transportation hubs and commercial and office facilities. The group plans to discuss regulatory improvements with relevant organizations to support the stable operation and wider adoption of parking robots.

Jung Hogeun, vice president of Hyundai Motor's Future Strategy Division, said, "This pilot project is significant because it not only confirms the potential of parking robot technology but also represents a process of applying robotics and mobility technologies in real urban environments. We will work to realize the potential for parking spaces to develop into smart city hubs that connect people, mobility, robots, and urban infrastructure."
