Hyundai Mobis posted year-on-year growth in both sales and operating profit in the third quarter of this year. Higher volumes of electrification parts and an improved product mix helped its module and core components business post a profit for the second consecutive quarter. The company is also accelerating the expansion of its robotics core components business, having begun production of actuator prototypes for Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot Atlas.
Hyundai Mobis said on October 30 that it recorded consolidated sales of 15.7233 trillion won, operating profit of 914.1 billion won and net profit of 598.4 billion won in the third quarter of this year. Compared with the same period last year, sales and operating profit rose 4.6% and 17.2%, respectively, while net profit fell 35.7%.
Compared with the previous quarter, sales fell 3.7% and operating profit declined 6.3%. Net profit also decreased 43.6%. Cumulative sales for the first three quarters totaled 47.6085 trillion won, while cumulative operating profit reached 2.6919 trillion won, up 4.1% and 10.9%, respectively, from the same period last year. Cumulative net profit fell 12.3% to 2.5417 trillion won.
By business segment, the module and core components business posted a profit for the second consecutive quarter as electric vehicle volumes increased, particularly in Europe, and the product mix improved. The after-sales service (A/S) parts business also recorded solid results, supported by higher global sales, favorable exchange rates and reduced tariff burdens in some countries.
During a conference call on October 30, Hyundai Mobis also outlined its business strategy to become a specialist in robotics core components. Starting in November, it will produce actuator prototypes at its Uiwang Research Center in Gyeonggi Province for Boston Dynamics' humanoid robot Atlas. In line with the expected supply start in 2028, the company plans to verify performance and reliability with its customer. It aims to continuously improve performance through product standardization and modularization.
In addition to actuators, Hyundai Mobis will expand into other robotics core components, including hand grippers, perception modules and controllers. Its strategy is to expand its product lineup by bringing related technologies in-house and, on that basis, diversify its customer base to include a range of humanoid manufacturers.
To this end, the company plans to establish a dedicated organization to expand its robotics core components portfolio and increase related staffing to about twice the current level. It will also strengthen collaboration so that each stage, from customer engagement to product planning, research and development, and production engineering, is closely coordinated.
Hyundai Mobis expects its annual research and development (R&D) investment to exceed 2 trillion won for the first time this year. In the fourth quarter, it plans to enhance technological competitiveness in core mobility businesses, including electrification and automotive electronics, and expand orders in global markets.
