Uijeongbu Mayor Kim Wongi: "Darakwon Housing Supply Must Be Followed by Industrial Base and Job Creation"
Move to establish an urban high-tech industrial complex within the public housing district
Develop plans for LH and GH participation; call on the government and Gyeonggi Province for institutional support
Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province, has called for measures to strengthen the industrial base and expand jobs in connection with the government's plan to develop the Darakwon Public Housing District, saying that "supplying housing alone, without self-sustaining functions, will limit regional development." The city plans to establish an urban high-tech industrial complex within the public housing district and secure the participation of public institutions capable of carrying out the project.
Uijeongbu City (Mayor Kim Wongi) announced this position on Oct. 29 in response to the government's announcement of plans to develop the Uijeongbu Darakwon Public Housing District.
The city said it has struggled to expand industrial facilities and attract businesses due to overlapping regulations, including restrictions on overconcentration in the Seoul metropolitan area and development restriction zones. It said that if housing supply alone increases under these conditions, the city could repeatedly see its residential function expand without securing jobs or a foundation for economic self-reliance.
Accordingly, the city plans to urge the government and Gyeonggi Province to include practical measures to strengthen the industrial and economic base from the district planning stage.
The key proposal is to establish an urban high-tech industrial complex within the public housing district. The plan is to secure industrial land to attract companies in future industries, linking business investment to the creation of quality jobs.
The city will also develop plans to involve public institutions such as Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and Gyeonggi Housing & Urban Development Corporation (GH) to ensure the project can be carried out. It will ask the government and Gyeonggi Province for the administrative and institutional support needed to develop the industrial complex.
In future discussions, the city plans to focus on securing the conditions needed for regional development. It aims to create a framework in which the government's housing supply and Gyeonggi Province's balanced regional development policy lead to a stronger industrial base and more jobs in Uijeongbu.
To this end, the city plans to respond to relevant procedures, including deliberations by the Capital Region Readjustment Committee, and present specific details on demand for industrial areas and the need for an industrial complex site.

Mayor Kim Wongi said, "Expanding housing supply should not simply become a burden on the region; it must lead to a stronger industrial base and self-sustaining functions that can change the region's future. We will actively convey Uijeongbu's circumstances and challenges to the government and Gyeonggi Province, and develop practical measures to establish an urban high-tech industrial complex and involve an institution capable of implementing the project, delivering results that residents can feel."
