Plans are underway to develop a public housing district with 14,600 homes in Sano-dong, Guri, Gyeonggi Province. A new development direction has been proposed for the site of an e-commerce logistics complex whose development was delayed for years after failing to establish its feasibility in two preliminary feasibility studies: a state-led public housing project.
Guri Mayor Shin Donghwa explains the announcement on the 29th of the Guri Geonwon Public Housing District as a new candidate site, covering 1,437,882 square meters in the Sano-dong area. Provided by Guri City.

The name “Guri Geonwon District” comes from Geonwolleung, the tomb of King Taejo Yi Seong-gye of the Joseon Dynasty. Combining the meanings of “strong” and “foundation,” the name reflects the goal of making Sano-dong a new foundation for Guri’s growth.
The ministry’s plan includes strengthening the district’s self-sufficiency, including by considering the relocation of the Guri Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market, and creating waterfront neighborhoods that make use of the natural environment around Yongamcheon and Wangsukcheon streams. The project site is adjacent to the Seoul Ring Expressway.
The city considers it important to secure an industrial base and jobs alongside housing supply. It plans to consult with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) to ensure that industrial and self-sufficiency functions are incorporated into the development plan.
Expanding the metropolitan transport network is also a key priority. The city plans to request that the metropolitan transport improvement plan include an extension of the Myeonmok Line, a new Sano Station on Subway Line 8, an additional stop at Galmae Station for GTX-B, a new Galmae Interchange, and expansion of the Taereung-Guri Interchange metropolitan road. These are proposals the city is asking to have included; they were not confirmed by the announcement of the candidate site.
The city will also discuss compensation and relocation measures for residents and landowners affected by the project. It plans to continue consultations with LH throughout the project to ensure that residents’ opinions are fully heard and that fair compensation and effective relocation measures are put in place.

As the development plan takes shape, we will make sure that local characteristics and conditions are fully reflected and that the project contributes to balanced development across the city.”
He added, “We will ensure the smooth relocation of the Guri Agricultural and Marine Products Wholesale Market, which the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport included in its plan, and transform the Sano-dong area into a distribution hub for the northeastern part of the Seoul metropolitan area. We will also do our utmost to improve transport infrastructure, including by establishing Sano Station.”
