Presidential Office on President Lee's Remarks on Foreign Workers, Multicultural Families: "Consider Context Rather Than Specific Words"
Kang Yujeong, Senior Presidential Spokesperson, in Media Notice
"The Two Topics Are Different Policy Proposals"
The Blue House said that President Lee Jae-myung’s remarks on foreign workers and multicultural families concerned “two different policy proposals,” adding, “We hope people will consider the context and main points of the remarks rather than focusing on specific words.”
Kang Yoo-jung, the Blue House’s senior presidential spokesperson, said this in a statement to the press on Oct. 29.
At a Cabinet meeting at the Blue House on Oct. 28, President Lee instructed Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Minister Song Mi-ryung to consider providing support for the labor costs of Korean workers. He said, “Even if we bring in foreign workers to do the work, it does not greatly benefit the national economy. They send all the money back to their home countries.”
In response, Kang explained, “The point of the remarks on labor and jobs at the Cabinet meeting was not that foreign workers are the core issue. The problem is that support for jobs in agriculture and fisheries is too low, so we need to create quality, productive jobs in those sectors that guarantee adequate wages.”
A post President Lee made on X (formerly Twitter) that same day also sparked controversy. Citing a post on the online community FM Korea, Lee said, “Systems in which local governments, including the Seoul Metropolitan Government, give preferential treatment to multicultural families have become a problem.” He added that the abolition of such preferential treatment should also be considered.

On this matter, Kang added, “The concerns raised about maternal and child health support in the post on social media were not about eliminating support for multicultural families. Rather, they raised the need to improve the fairness and reasonableness of the priority system for using postpartum care centers, and to establish a support system that all families with newborns can agree with.”
